Do you find yourself struggling with recurring thoughts that seem to be holding you back from engaging in tasks or relationships? Maybe you experience intense overwhelm or fear about certain situations, and even find yourself avoiding those things. Have you noticed difficulty concentrating or sleeping? Sometimes you may notice physical sensations like increased heart rate or shortness of breath.
If you identify with some, or all, of these things, it could be possible you may be experiencing the effects of anxiety. Let me first tell you that you are NOT alone. Anxiety is actually more common than you might think, affecting about 40 million adults in the U.S. every year (Anxiety & Depression Association of America, 2021).
Many people view anxiety as this sort of “monster”, wanting to just finally get rid of it (and- rightfully so- nobody wants to struggle with anxiety). The truth is that we cannot get rid of it, but what we can do is lessen its ability to control us. In working with anxiety, we utilize a variety of treatment modalities tailored to your unique experience with a main focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. We will get to know a bit about you, and how long you’ve been dealing with anxiety. Then, we can gently work towards identifying what comes before and after an anxious episode, and then explore ways to deal with it more effectively when it comes up. All the while recognizing those unwanted thoughts as simply thoughts and not a definition of you as a person.
